Measuring Violence-Related Attitudes, Beliefs, and Behaviors Among Youths
Toal, Swahn and Behrens Dahlberg This compendium provides researchers and prevention specialists with a set of tools to assess violence-related beliefs, behaviors, and influences, as well as to evaluate programs to prevent youth violence. If you are new to the field of youth violence prevention and unfamiliar with available measures, you may find this compendium to be particularly useful. If you are an experienced researcher, this compendium may serve as a resource to identify additional measures to assess the factors associated with violence among youths.

Although this compendium contains more than 170 measures, it is not an exhaustive listing of available measures. A few of the more widely used measures to assess aggression in children, for example, are copyrighted and could not be included here. Other measures being used in the field, but not known to the authors, are also not included. Many of the measures included in the first edition of the compendium focused on individual violence-related attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. These types of measures are included in this edition as well and may be particularly useful if you are evaluating a school-based curriculum or a community-based program designed to reduce violence among youths. Several measures to assess peer, family, and community influences have been added to the compendium. Many of these measures are from the major longitudinal and prevention research studies of youth violence being conducted in the United States.

Adult Children of Abusive Parents: A Healing Program for Those Who Have Been Physically, Sexually, or Emotionally Abused
Steven Farmer The violent forms of child abuse that make headlines are not the only ones that leave lifelong scars. A child who grows up in an unstable environment where empathy, clear boundaries and trust are lacking, can end up living a ravaged adulthood. Children can be crippled by mixed messages, family secrets and reversed parent-child roles. Many victims of these practices are not even sure their childhood was abusive. This balanced, practical guide delineates traits of abusive families. Narrative vignettes in each section illustrate and personalize critical issues. Most valuable is the step-by-step self-help program that includes exercises and journal work for recovery.

Rape Is...
Cambridge Documentary Films "Rape is…," a new half-hour documentary video, explores the meaning and consequences of rape. This documentary looks at rape from a global and historical perspective, but focuses mainly on the domestic cultural conditions that make this human rights violation the most underreported crime in America. Many types of sexual assault are not considered a serious crime by the legal system and our society refuses to see the true cost of this brutal denial of basic rights. "Rape is..." expands the narrow ways we think of sexual violence, and demonstrates that it is not a sporadic and rare occurrence, but a cultural and criminal outrage that affects millions of women, children and men all over the world.
" Rape is…" includes the poetry and ideas of: Salamishah Tillet , a rape survivor and co-producer of the multimedia performance piece on rape, "A Long Walk Home." Eve Ensler, playwright, "The Vagina Monologues," rape survivor and activist who explores the ideas behind V-day stop rape actions.
Vednita Carter, the founder and director of Breaking Free, an organization that provides services to prostituted women. Her insights about the connections between prostitution and rape inform "Rape is…"
Includes Commentary by:
Diane Rosenfeld, a Fellow at Harvard Law School who teaches in the women's studies department at Harvard. She provides crucial ideas about the issue.
Rich Ridlon, whose uncle sexually abused him throughout his childhood. Rich has spent 8 years in various prisons and criminal institutions. His perspectives on the consequences of rape and his understanding of prison rape are critical to the understanding of rape.
Kathy Girod , a rape survivor, whose psychological and social insights make the consequences of rape starkly evident.
Game Over - Gender Race & Violence in Video Games
Media Education Foundation Video and computer games represent a $6 billion a year industry. One out of every ten households in American owns a Sony Playstation. Children who own video game equipment play an average of ten hours per week. And yet, despite capturing the attention of millions of children worldwide, video games remain one of the least scrutinized cultural industries.

Game Over is the first educational documentary to address the fastest growing segment of the media through engaging questions of gender, race and violence.

Game Over offers a refreshing dialogue about the complex and controversial topic of video game violence, and is designed to encourage high school and college students to think critically about the video games they play.

War Zone
Media Education Foundation What does it feel like to be a woman on the street in a cultural environment that does nothing to discourage men from heckling, following, touching or disparaging women in public spaces?

Filmmaker Maggie Hadleigh-West believes that the streets are a War Zone for women. Armed with only a video-camera, she both demonstrates this experience and, by turning and confronting her abusers, reclaims space that was stolen from her.

War Zone is an excellent discussion starter for both men and women. It gives voice and expression to a disturbing daily aspect of being a woman in this society. It also gives men a direct personal feeling for what harassing behavior looks and feels like to a woman. Young men who may think such behavior is cool or funny will be forced to rethink their assumptions.

War Zone is a classroom, documentary edition of Maggie Hadleigh-West's first film by the same title. Her film has been screened and applauded at scores of festivals in the U.S. and abroad. She has appeared to discuss the film on the Today Show, CBS News, 20/20, BBC, NPR, CNN, and Eye to Eye with Connie Chung.

Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and A World Without Rape
Jaclyn Friedman, Jessica Valenti In this groundbreaking new look at rape edited by writer and activist Jaclyn Freidman and Full Frontal Feminism and He’s A Stud, She’s A Slut author Jessica Valenti, the way we view rape in our culture is finally dismantled and replaced with a genuine understanding and respect for female sexual pleasure. Feminist, political, and activist writers alike will present their ideas for a paradigm shift from the “No Means No” model—an approach that while necessary for where we were in 1974, needs an overhaul today.

Yes Means Yes will bring to the table a dazzling variety of perspectives and experiences focused on the theory that educating all people to value female sexuality and pleasure leads to viewing women differently, and ending rape. Yes Means Yes aims to have radical and far-reaching effects: from teaching men to treat women as collaborators and not conquests, encouraging men and women that women can enjoy sex instead of being shamed for it, and ultimately, that our children can inherit a world where rape is rare and swiftly punished. With commentary on public sex education, pornography, mass media, Yes Means Yes is a powerful and revolutionary anthology.

How to Help a Sexual Assault Survivor: What Men Can Do
One in Four, Inc. This video is a performance of "The Men's Program" by experienced peer educators. Men who watch the video will learn what rape is, what it might feel like, what women tend to experience before, during and after being raped, how to help a women recover from a rape experience, what they can do to modify their own behavior in their intimate encounters, and will be encouraged to confront their peers when necessary. Thought provoking and provocative, this video is great for use with fraternities, sports teams, men's residence halls, military units, community organizations, or any group of men who want to learn how to help women recover from rape. Women looking to present to men who can't find a male presenter could find it useful to show and then take questions or discuss other material. Also a great tool to show women how men can be educated about rape. In addition, it would be very helpful to help train sexual assault peer educators, or to help a peer education program get off the ground!
Police Rape Training Video
One in Four, Inc. First available from NO MORE in 2000, and in an earlier version from the Seattle Police Department, this powerful video is a presentation of a Police officer talking to new officers about how to handle rape cases. In doing so, Sgt. Ramon shares the story of a male police officer who went about his everyday business and was raped by two men. Afterward, other officers didn't believe it happened as he said it did, couldn't understand why he didn't fight back, and blamed him for what happened. The raped officer struggled with many aspects of rape trauma syndrome. This video is especially useful for helping men understand what it might feel like to be raped and is necessary for use as part of presenting "The Men's Program." Great for Universities, the Military, and community outreach organizations.
I Wish I Could Have Said No

Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity
Robert Jensen In our culture, porn makes the man. So argues Robert Jensen in Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity. Jensen’s treatise begins with a simple demand: “Be a man.” It ends with a defiant response: “I chose to struggle to be a human being.” The journey from masculinity to humanity is found in the candid and intelligent exploration of porn’s devastating role in defining masculinity.

Getting Off seamlessly blends personal anecdotes from Jensen’s years as a feminist anti-pornography activist with scholarly research. In his trademark conversational style, he shows how mainstream pornography reinforces social definitions of manhood and influences men’s attitudes about women and how to treat them.

Pornography is a thriving multi-billion-dollar industry; it drives the direction of emerging media technology. Pornography also makes for complicated politics. These days, anti-porn arguments are assumed to be “anti-sex” and thus a critical debate is silenced. This book breaks that silence. Alarming and thought-provoking, Getting Off asks tough, but crucial, questions about pornography, sex, manhood, and the way toward genuine social justice.

Robert Jensen is an associate professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege and Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity.

The Truth About Rape
Teresa M. Lauer Imagine living more fully … loving more intensely and feeling healthier … perhaps for the first time since your rape. Being unafraid … even confident … in your own skin and being able to anticipate, even put an end to, your nightmares and flashbacks.

What if I told you I can help you develop the ability to foresee and control the triggers that cause you anxiety?

Imagine feeling as if you’re not alone and isolated anymore, living a life without shame and without guilt. Knowing where … and how … to find inspiration, motivation, and dedication as you recover. Imagine an end to your struggles and frustration … and experience clarity of mind and the ability to focus even more acutely than you did prior to your rape …

I promise you one thing about The Truth About Rape: This isn’t a book that leaves you on your own. I interviewed over 40 women who share with you their obstacles in recovery and teach you new ways to approach your recovery … ways that will radically change the way you feel about yourself.

You’ll feel as if you’re having a discreet conversation with trusted friends in these women and send your recovery soaring. Like Eleanor, 33, who talks about her own experience with a cutting-edge therapy that you’ve likely heard much about lately. Or gain insight from hearing how Kate, 44, struggled with, and found her own answer to one of the most confusing for rape victims: "How could God let this happen to me?" And you’ll read how Allison, 26, conquered her inability to concentrate and relearned to focus her energy after her rape.

But emotional and spiritual issues aren’t the only ones discussed. We also talk about physical and sexual issues as well. For example Melina, 30, talks about learning she had an eating disorder and Janice, 33, discusses overcoming her nerves in talking to her OB/GYN about her rape.

Books on rape rarely address a woman’s sexuality following her rape, but I feel strongly that intimacy concerns must be a part of the healing process and so invite you to read about how Carol, 32, told her husband she was ready to make love again and how Martha, 43, achieved a fulfilling sex life, even though she suffered from chronic pain from the rape. And for each of these questions, I’ve included a clinical view as well.

There are truths to recovery to be sure … truths I wish I’d known. Knowing would have saved me many years of tears, heartache … and insecurity. "But what are these truths?" You may ask. "There’s nothing I can do about what’s happened to me!"

You’re correct … to a degree. There’s nothing any of us can do about our past … but we can control our future and how we perceive what’s happened to us. And this is where these truths come in …

The first truth I’d like to share with you ... you’re not alone in your recovery

The first section of The Truth About Rape is my own journal … 50 excerpts from actual therapy sessions. You’ll discover through these sessions that not only are not alone, there’s someone in the world who truly understands. But that’s not the most powerful part of this truth: You’ll learn through my personal sessions with my therapist how to confide in others and gain empathy and compassion by better communicating your feelings and needs …

Being able to read these sessions are invaluable; the ability to sit in on a therapy session is extremely rare and an incredible opportunity to learn what goes on behind closed doors …

The second truth I’d like to share with you … whether you’re seeing a therapist or on your own, recovery is within reach

Healing from sexual assault sometimes feels as if you’re taking one step forward and one step back, but the important thing is that you’re taking a step. I wrote this book so that it’s really easy to read. You can pick it up, turn to question that you need an answer to, read it for a couple of minutes if that’s all the time you have … put it back down. Sometimes you just need an answer to a question. If you’re in therapy, that’s ok … there are many therapists using my book as a guide and if you’re not in therapy, that’s ok too; I’ve included an additional 600 resources.

The third truth I’d like to share with you… every question you have has an answer

One of my biggest struggles when I wrote this book was how to answer the many questions that I had following my rape. When you’re trying to recover, you can’t image that there are others who’ve experienced the same thing … and survived … but I assure you there are many who have.

Like I said, through over 40 questions and answers (with both a personal perspective of a rape victim and my clinical view) you’ll feel as if you’re having a discreet conversation with a trusted friend in the women you’ll find in The Truth About Rape.

And we answer emotional, spiritual, physical, and sexual questions and concerns like …

* Have you ever wondered why you’re thinking of the rape all the time and just can’t seem to get over it? There are very real reasons that you have this response to a traumatic experience and you’ll be surprised to know that it’s a form of protection and really a benefit to your emotional health in the long run. I’ll tell you why …

* Do you wonder what kind of man could do this and want to learn how to never let it happen again? I can’t guarantee … in fact, no one can … that you’ll never be a victim of crime again, but I can share with you behavioral signs to look for in strangers and acquaintances that alert you to the possibility of something happening …

* Do you suspect you might be suffering from an eating disorder following your rape? I can share with you the symptoms of three major eating disorders … the reasons eating disorders are so prevalent in women who’ve experienced sexual assault … and what you can do to help yourself if you suspect an eating disorder …

* Have you noticed a profound shift in your attitude and feelings about sex? I compassionately answer many of your most pressing and intimate questions here in an entire section devoted to your sexuality concerns after your rape. And, I reveal a number of common issues that can arise after rape that can be easily resolved …

* Do you want desperately to share your experience with your loved ones and have them understand what you have been through? You deserve empathy from those you love during this time. I help you figure out the best way for you to confide in your spouse, lover, family and friends.

And the last truth I’d like to share with you? It’s probably the most important: If I Can Do It, You Can Too Why do I say this? It’s not just a cliché … I’m deadly serious about recovery. My own personal experience mirrors many of my readers … perhaps yours … and I’ve dedicated my professional life, following graduation from the University of San Francisco with a masters degree in Counseling Psychology, to primarily pro bono work to ensure I help as many women recover … and fully heal from … their rape as possible.

I know recovery is possible. Please … don’t let another moment go by without taking charge of your recovery … and your future. You are not alone in your recovery

But He Never Hit Me: The Devastating Cost of Non-Physical Abuse to Girls and Women
Dr. Jill A. Murray When most people hear the word “abuse,” they naturally conjure up images of broken bones, black eyes, and bruises. But in truth, physical violence comprises the vast minority of abusive behaviors in any relationship. The overwhelming types of abuses are those that are difficult to recognize: verbal, emotional, psychological, financial, and spiritual.

Because no outward signs of mistreatment exist, these types of abuses usually go unnoticed, especially by the woman experiencing them. In particular, abusive comments often lead a woman in any unhealthy relationship to distrust her own reality and good sense.

But He Never Hit Me: The Devastating Cost of Non-Physical Abuse to Girls and Women exposes the truth about these destructive behaviors and also reveals the red flags of a potentially abusive relationship. Women can explore their own background information to understand what led them to these men, the shocking costs that non-physically threatening relationships have on every part of their life, and ways in which they can make changes toward a more positive, healthy, and rewarding future.

Imperative for women of all ages, from teens through senior citizens, But He Never Hit Me joins and aligns a large and supportive community of women dedicated to healthy, rewarding relationships.

Crazy Love
Leslie Morgan Steiner At 22, Leslie Morgan Steiner seemed to have it all: a Harvard diploma, a glamorous job at Seventeen magazine, a downtown New York City apartment. Plus a handsome, funny, street-smart boyfriend who adored her. But behind her façade of success, this golden girl hid a dark secret. She’d made a mistake shared by millions: she fell in love with the wrong person.

At first Leslie and Conor seemed as perfect together as their fairy-tale wedding. Then came the fights she tried to ignore: he pushed her down the stairs of the house they bought together, poured coffee grinds over her hair as she dressed for a critical job interview, choked her during an argument, and threatened her with a gun.

Several times, he came close to making good on his threat to kill her. With each attack, Leslie lost another piece of herself.

Speak Up Speak Out
TAASA The Texas Association Against Sexual Assault’s award-winning "Speak up. Speak out." public awareness campaign is expanding its reach into the digital world. This fall, TAASA hosted six survivors for a weekend with the Digital Storytelling Project.

Since the early 1990s, the Center for Digital Storytelling has been integrating aspects of creative writing, oral history, and digital media manipulation to assist people with little to no prior media-making experience in creating short digital videos, or "digital stories." These digital stories are a continuation of the concept behind TAASA’s "Speak up. Speak out." campaign. The power of survivors telling their own stories is unmatched, and the longer format of the digital stories will help TAASA expand the discussion of sexual violence across Texas and across the internet.

Six survivors from across the state came to Austin to share their stories for TAASA’s training and public awareness activities. All of them had volunteered to participate in the "Speak up. Speak out." campaign.

Over the course of the weekend, the survivors crafted and recorded personal narratives, while blending still images and music. They were guided through computer tutorials which enabled them, with teacher support, to edit their own stories.

The Center for Digital Storytelling has worked with a broad spectrum of individuals and groups, ranging from artists and historians, to college and university faculty and students; from nonprofit organizations, to social activists and spiritual communities. Their work has been showcased on cable television, in higher education classrooms, at film festivals, on the web, and as part of community-based trainings, screenings, and activist events.

The core element of the Center for Digital Storytelling teaching philosophy is the popular education technique of starting from where participants are. In a story circle, the survivors delved deeply into their own stories from their assaults to their ongoing recovery.

Following an introductory presentation on the fundamentals of storytelling, the participants received a crash course PhotoShop tutorial. For the weekend, TAASA’s conference room was transformed into a high-tech computer lab. Each survivor had her own laptop to edit her story with the assistance of Center for Digital Storytelling and TAASA staff. The survivors combined background music with photographs, letter and other images to create their story.

After several hours of hard work and sweat (and a few tears), the finished products were screened for the group. The verdict: Success. Everyone was very pleased with how their stories were presented, and TAASA is excited about sharing them.

Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault: Perspectives on What Works
Arlene N. Weisz, Beverly M. Black Arlene Weisz and Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence prevention. Enhancing existing research with the shared wisdom of the nation's prevention community, Weisz and Black describe program goals and content, recruitment strategies, membership, structure, and community involvement in practitioners' own words. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant.

Weisz and Black show that multisession programs are most useful in preventing violence and assault, because they enable participants to learn new behaviors and change entrenched attitudes. Combining single- and mixed-gender sessions, as well as steering discussions away from the assignment of blame, also yield positive results. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing. Manuals help in guiding educators and improving evaluation, but they should also allow adolescents to direct the discussion. Good programs regularly address teachers and parents. Ultimately, though, Weisz and Black find that the ideal program retains prevention educators long after the apprentice stage, encouraging self-evaluation and new interventions based on the wisdom that experience brings.
